Today’s Annual Faculty-Student Softball Game marked the official end of the Burke Sports Year. And what a year it was, with team championships in Cross Country and Track, strong finishes in Softball and other sports, and individual champions in Wrestling and Track.
Amid all the special things at Burke, it’s sometimes easy to forget how important sports is to life at Burke. At Burke everyone can play. Our oldest daughter came to Burke in the 7th grade with little, if any, experience in team sports, and what we thought was an aversion to competition. Boy, were we wrong. By the time she graduated, Burke had helped her get in touch with her inner Ty Cobb, becoming a fierce competitor in multiple sports and an avid fan of many sports as well.
Sports can be about so much more than just winning. It can be a path to developing as an athlete, a teammate, a leader, and most importantly as a person. Burke’s ‘everyone plays’ policy and its support of the Positive Coaching Alliance reflects that it ‘gets’ the value of sport. But as we saw in 2008-09, it also doesn’t hurt to win.
