This year we put together a new service learning opportunity for our 8th graders. We reached out to 3 different preschools – Phoebe Hearst, Broadcaster’s Child Development Center and UDC – and asked if our 8th grade students could present a science lesson, a history lesson and an English lesson to their preschool aged children. They agreed and our kids got to work! They developed a fun and interesting lesson about germs and the importance of hand washing for their science lesson. The students brought over glitter and hand lotion to represent germs. They put “germs” on the preschooler’s hands and they had a fantastic time washing the “germs” off! For their history lesson, our 8th graders developed engaging activities about Native American Indians. The preschoolers had a great time listening to stories and learning about how Indians lived. Our 8th graders helped the preschoolers make amazing Native American Indian headdresses! The children were so excited to take their work home. For our English lesson, our 8th graders selected classic children’s stories to read to the preschoolers. They also created their own children’s books for the children. Our 8th graders worked very hard developing and illustrating a story for the preschoolers. On our last visit, the 8th graders read their stories to the children. The preschoolers loved the stories and were over the moon about getting to keep the books! To see more pictures check out edmundburkepix.
