It was the perfect day for a ball game. Clear sky. A breeze. Fierce pitching. Reliable fielding. Clutch hitting. Balloons, an ice cream truck for the fans. And a well-played win. To top it off – it was Senior Night. Can I help it if I feel a song coming on. Maestro, if you please (apologies to Rogers, Hammerstein, Tinkers, Evers and Chance):
Fast balls and line drives
in blue sky and green grass,
Hard slides and drag bunts
Dive for a shoestring catch
Balloons that rise high on
cheers that they sing
these are a few of the Burke Rites of Spring
Eye black and ice cream
With foul balls and car dents
Flowers and warm hugs
‘Tween seniors and parents
Words from the coaches
and tears that they bring
These are a few of the Burke Rites of the Spring
