Last Friday, May 14th, 25 students and faculty joined to hear an address by Nancy Geller, president-elect of the American Statistical Association, in the theatre. Dr. Geller is the Director of the National Heart,Lung, and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) Office of Biostatistics Research. Of special interest to us at Burke is that she is the aunt of Eric Geller ’10 , who has been a student in Rachel Braun’s AP Statistics this year!
Dr. Geller’s talk was entitled “Bistatistics: A Personal Journey” and she spoke about how she came to study the subject and pursue a career path in biostatistics. She was kind enough to research the AP Statistics curriculum in preparing her remarks, so the examples she gave, involving experimental design and questionnaire development, covered topics familiar to the students.
