SUMMERTIME FUN FOR GEEKY (NERDY?) GIRLS

Ariella Gladstein (Burke ’07, Beloit ’11) and Rachel Braun (Math Dept) had a reunion of sorts in July, enjoying some chai (latte) and chi (statistics). Ariella took Linear Algebra at U Maryland this summer, and discovered some cool matrix connections to least-squares regression estimates that she remembered from her AP Statistics days with Rachel. Girls just want to have geek fun, of course, so they met at Starbucks to take a second look at least-squares regression techniques, now illuminated by Ariella’s more recent prowess in calculus, matrix algebra, and further studies in statistics. The applications to Ariella’s passion for genetics are extensive.

This comic strip – http://www.xkcd.com/747/ — was not helpful as the two debated whether they were geeks or nerds. They did agree that multivariate statistics — an extension of topics in AP Stat – is pretty cool, though.

KidPower DC, Burke (and MTV): Day 3 of Burke Service Week 2010!

Burke is crazy busy during the school year, but you may be surprised at how busy we are during the summer! Last year, we launched a new initiative at Burke with KidPower DC called the Summer Leadership Academy. KidPower DC is a non-profit organization that provides educational programming for 250 youth from underserved communities in the District of Columbia. In the summer, DCPS students explore advanced civic concepts through academic, artistic, and service-learning opportunities. Organized in conjunction with Burke’s Office of Service and Activism (OSA), Burke serves as the proud host to the four-week program centered on four core subjects (Math, English, History and Science) as well as service, field trips and leadership. The students are selected by KidPowerDC, and Burke students serve as volunteer tutors and teacher aides. We are looking for a new team for summer 2010, e-mail me at diego_duran@eburke.org if you’re interested!

So where does MTV come in? Last summer, and just airing last week, the film crew from the Real World DC decided that the Summer Leadership Academy would be one of the places where cast members intern…check out this link to see a couple of Burke seniors (be warned-there’s some colorful language and imagery throughout the episode in typical MTV reality style…go to the 20:00 minute mark for Burke)

The Beat Goes On…

The ’09 school year may be over, but the beat continued with this year’s Burke Band Camp. John and two Burke musical elves kept on keepin’ it real for kids from a number of different schools, playing everything from Green Day to a Camp curtain closing Smoke on the Water (which was the first time this listener had ever understood any of the lyrics other than the chorus). Ceviche Prepares for Second Course

Pretty in Pink

On Saturday, Ceviche, aka Raw Fish or Pink, etc., entered the first round of the DC Co-ed Adult Soccer Playoffs. The other team, more highly ranked than Ceviche, showed up in what it claimed to be pink jersies (they looked more salmon to these eyes), causing Ceviche to don yellow pennies. Nontheless, Cevich made sashimi of their opponents to take round one. Tied nil/nil after a tense first half, we dedicated the second half to our second Nakamoto infant of the season, Koh. It worked. There were strong performances by a host of players, including Adam (who walked off w/ Mr. Pink); stellar leadership by Aaron (as always); and 3 unanswered goals by Nathan and a former Burkie (pictured above) to move Ceviche on to Round II next Saturday. Go Koh!!

PS – the next time you fall asleep in latin – you may want to pull out this photo in defense.
