Reggie Wills, our Director of Equity and Inclusion, Makes the News!

Reggie was interviewed by Teaching Tolerance Magazine, and he discussed Burke’s role in celebrating International Abolition Day last year in conjunction with the Frederick Douglass Family Foundation. He is quoted throughout the article and the reporter included details about the efforts of our students to recognize the plight of victims of slave trafficking.

This is what the author wrote, “At last year’s International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, students at Edmund Burke presented a range of co-curricular projects. In one math class, high school students conducted a statistical analysis of slavery today. One student recited a poem on the theme of human bondage. Another produced a DVD of digital images featuring women and children enslaved around the world. Others created pamphlets and handed them out on the streets of Washington, D.C., to educate passersby to the suffering of 21st century slaves.

3 Quarks

Nope, this isn’t a physics post – at least not entirely. Rather, it’s a recommendation that you check out the 3 Quarks Daily site. Similar to the vision of Burke. Word, 3 Quarks covers the waterfront, from “science, design, literature, current affairs, art, and anything else [they] deem inherently fascinating.” Within the last 24 hours alone there are posts about: John Updike, the poetry of Robert Creely and Octavio Paz, a video of extreme street tumbling by Damien Walters, the late marriage of George Elliott to a man 20 years her junior, the coming disappointment of stem cell research, and a video of the US Pole Dancing Championship. Eclectic enough for you?

Btw – they are hosting an annual contest for the best scientific blog. If you have any blogs that you are partial to, nominations are due by the end of June 1 and voting will end June 8.

PS – David Byrne of the Talking Heads reads it daily – so it’s got to be good!

Congratulations go to our very own Burke parent and Board member, Marilyn Milloy, for winning a 2009 National Magazine Award!! Marilyn, Features Editor at AARP The Magazine, together with her colleagues from the magazine won the award for Online Interactive Feature for their work on 1968: The Year That Rocked Our World. It’s a great piece and an extremely creative use of the Web. Well done!!

If we could lure Marilyn to Burke. Word, maybe a 2010 NMA could be ours!

Previewing the Final Cageliner

Hello, my name is Eric Geller, and I’m a rising senior at Burke. I’m the World/Business editor for the Cageliner, and I’m here to give you a preview of our final issue.

No no no, calm down, this isn’t the last issue ever. But we’re wrapping up the 2008-2009 school year, and that means the latest and greatest Cageliner will also be this year’s last. So here’s a preview of some of our leading stories.

Journalism Confessionals – We’re sure you’ve been wanting to know the inner workings of the Journalism class since early Fall. So look for Cecilia D’Anastasio‘s shocking expose in this last issue.
If I Ran The Show – What would Burke be like if our head of school was departing senior Sam Porter? Read the exciting what-if story, with thoughts on the changes Burke should make, from the man himself.
Cursive Senselessness – When a calligraphic convention becomes cumbersome or confusing, you can count on Renee Brown to step in with the explanation.

Hopefully my preview has you on the edge of your seat. And since the Cageliner only publishes physical copies (yep, we’re riding this dead-industry train to the bitter end!), you’ll just have to grab the print edition.
